I’m currently surviving off weed and music. What can I say, life is hard.
The connectedness of American middle class society has died and it is increasingly difficult to feel something. For a feely person like myself, this is the ultimate death sentence. However, I’m discovering maybe it’s more about my spiritual location than the state of the union, so I’m digging my way out of hell with my feels – going where my intuition leads me and catching vibes wherever I find them.
Visiting the world of musicians is one of my favorite pastimes. It makes my own crowded world feel less small and yet less lonely at the same time. I admire their ability to express their emotions in a way that makes us feel too. It’s a nice relief from the often suffocating pressure of life. When I add marijuana in, the vibes get taken to new heights (literally). There are even some songs I’ve heard multiple times on planet earth, and missed some levels of the vibe. It’s as if the joint made these songs brand new.
Here is a short list of some of these songs I heard anew for the first time high:
Too Cool To Die – Post Malone
On the surface this song seemed satisfying enough, but when I heard it high the music behind the vocals wrapped it up nicely. The melody and tone gave me the feeling that I was already dead – music from the afterlife so to speak. It was light and airy, yet very stoner chill.
Pretty much every song Lil Wayne made
Most sane people agree that Lil Wayne’s music is dope. Sober, the music is fun to listen to, but listening high takes it from a good song to an entire experience. I can’t explain it, but you get the sense that he is as close to fully expressed as an artist can get. Considering most of us struggle speaking the truth at the dinner table, it’s a mind-blowing accomplishment.
Donald Trump – Mac Miller
It was the giggle at the beginning of the song. Way better high.
Venom – Eminem
Eminem is another artist who sets the bar for self expression. His recent work has fans doubtful of his skill and questioning whether or not he’s still ‘got it’ (whatever that means) but this song among an album with poor reviews proves that he is still very capable of making a good song (that is if you define good as immersively expressive). I love sinking into the old fashioned head banger vibes of this song.
Viva La Vida – Coldplay
I’ve been listening to this song for many years and I suspect it’s a combination of life experience and weed that brought it back to life for me. It is a story about a king who has lost his crown and a classic human spirit tale. The lessons we can all learn from a fallen king is as timeless as it is captivating. I used to think of this as one of those songs you love for reasons you can’t explain, but I finally realized how beautifully the story is told and got more out of the parable high.
